Assistant Professor of Education - Elementary Social Studies and Bilingual (Spanish) Education- The Department of Teacher Education invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin Fall 2020. Candidates for this position must be able to advance the College of Education, Kinesiology, and Social Work's mission to develop diverse educational leaders who can meet the needs of a multicultural and multilingual society. We particularly seek candidates with a specialty in Social Studies methodology and bilingual education, who have a passion for preparing future teachers from an asset-oriented approach that is driven in equity, inclusion, and social-justice. The assignment will also include teaching social studies methodology courses in the Multiple Subject (Elementary Teaching) Credential program in the Department of Teacher Education and teaching courses for Spanish Bilingual certification.
The Assistant Professor will facilitate teacher candidates' development in teaching social studies integrated with Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) standards and bilingual education methodologies to K-8 students. Social Studies methods course teaching responsibilities include: facilitate teacher candidates' development in teaching social studies and VAPA standards to K-8 students. Model and explain how beginning teachers can use history and the related social sciences to develop students' understanding of the physical world, encourage their participation and responsibility within the democratic system of government; teach students about our past; help students understand basic economic principles; develop basic concepts of personal financial literacy; and improve their ability to make reasoned decisions based upon evidence. Develop beginning teachers' understanding of the vital role these disciplines play in the development of student literacy because of their shared emphasis on text, argumentation, and use of evidence. Bilingual education responsibilities include: prepare bilingual education credential candidates to teach in various bilingual education settings inclusive of linguistically and culturally diverse communities, demonstrate a commitment to educational access and equity of emergent bilinguals in various bilingual education settings, and build foundational understanding of bilingual education theory and practice in TK-12 settings.
All faculty members are required to supervise student teaching/fieldwork, advising responsibilities, engage in scholarship and provide service to the department/college/university Assignment may include teaching and advising in the Master of Arts program, and teaching at off-site centers. Additional responsibilities include program development and implementation; development of contracts and grants; development of university/school partnerships; chairing Masters theses; and service to community, county and district agencies and professional organizations.
1. Doctorate in Education. ABD considered with completion by the time of appointment.
2. Demonstrated expertise in the teaching of social studies in a multiple subject assignment, enabling students to learn and use basic analytic thinking skills in history-social science, while developing (dual) language skills.
3. Demonstrated expertise in teaching informational text comprehension, with clear connection to English Language Development (ELD), Spanish Language Development (SLD), English Language Arts (ELA) standards and/or Common Core Español standards.
4. A minimum of five full years of teaching experiences in a K-8 classroom as the teacher of record in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms.
5. Strong evidence of teaching effectiveness (Note: Applicant must include evaluations of prior teaching experience).
6. Strong generic training with skills and experience in assessment, curriculum, and instruction of students.
7. Potential for or record of scholarly/creative activity related to social studies, bilingualism, bilingual/multicultural education and pedagogy, working with and understanding linguistically and socially diverse environments and communities.
1. Teaching experiences in a K-8 dual immersion classroom.
2. Expertise in methods to teach emergent bilinguals.
3. Experience teaching in classrooms/programs in linguistically and socially diverse classrooms with a substantive percentage of emergent bilinguals.
4. Knowledge of California credentialing regulations, and local, state, and national trends.
5. Experience teaching and supervising adults, preferably some of which was at the University level.
6. Experience with research design and methodology.
7. Knowledge of uses of technology in education.
